An American Journey

My name is Oli and I am a student journalist who loves to write and tell people’s stories. My first series of articles will focus on demystifying American politics.

The United States and its current affairs influence the rest of the world like no other country on Earth and are commented on like nowhere else. Despite this, owing to the country’s size and makeup I believe passionately that very few people actually understand it — myself included! So, I set out to change that this Summer, travelling to various places in the US and speaking to lots of different people in an attempt to understand what is going on in ‘The Land of the Free’. in the build-up to the midterm elections and with Trump controversies seeming more significant and varied than ever, there has perhaps never been a more complicated time in American politics.

The pieces that follow are my reflections and those of fascinating people I have spoken to from different backgrounds and communities, trying to unpack what defines this fascinating country and its political troubles.
